Forest Treks With The Kids

Updated: Jan 21

The lockdown of 2020 taught me a lot of things. It firstly taught me life is to short to be unhappy. Those thoughts will just eat away at you. Let it go.

There is a message in the way a person treats you, not everyone deserves access to you so protect your spirit.

Life can change with a snap of a finger and unexpected people will be there for you.

But above all....

Lockdown 2020 enabled me to reconnect with my soul, bond deeper with my children and enjoy the freedoms of green space and forest.

There is nothing that clears the mind and cleanses your energy better than a walk amongst nature. It is statistically proven to improve psychological health by reducing stress, enhancing mood and replenishing mental fatigue.

The benefits of nature walks also have significant positive effects on children. The effects of nature exposure include improved cognitive functioning (including increased concentration, greater attention capacities, and higher academic performance), better motor coordination, reduced stress levels, increased social interaction with adults and other children, and improved social skills.

Who doesn't love the Moomins!? Walthamstow Wetlands is hosting a brand new outdoor exhibition dedicated to Tove Jansson the creator of The Moomins.

The 211-hectare nature reserve is a sight of natural beauty and is occupied by little islands that hum with the sound of wildlife. Walthamstow Wetlands has teamed up with the William Morris Gallery to produce a year-long exhibition about Finnish artist and Moomins creator Tove Jansson. The Wetlands have facilities onsite such as cafe and bathrooms.

A mouse took a stroll through the deep dark wood....

I think every parent and child knows the first line of that book!?

Yes The Gruffalo! There is two very beautiful walks you and your children can take to see these magical characters. One being in Horsenden and the other in Essex. Parking in Horsenden Farm and the pub just along called The Ballot Box.

Tucked away in the magical Aldenham Country Park you will find the very sweet 100 acre wood, Winnie the pooh trail. Take a picnic and head round the trail ro discover Owls tree top house, Piglets tiny home too and of course Winnie the pooh. Aldenham country park also has an adventure playground, restaurant, cafe, farm, mini playground, boat club.

It is a wonderful place to visit.

Painshill host an annual programme of great events in which includes great woodland trails they tend to change with the months so keep checking in, they have previously hosted Mystic dragons, giant easter eggs and winter wonderland. Talks and tours about the history of garden. During the summer painshill is home to a openair cinema.

The Horniman Nature Trail is the oldest in London. The railway was closed in 1954 and the area was left unmanaged until 1972. This resulted in it becoming a wild woodland area. Today, the trail is managed carefully to encourage a wide variety of plants, birds, insects and other animals that depend on each other for survival.

Pond and meadow habitats have been introduced to attract new species. A log pile area is home to dozens of different mini beasts, including the endangered stag beetle. Making this area a beautiful wild woodland.

Weald Country Park is home to the Stick Man Play Trail. Designed by leading natural play specialists Infinite Playgrounds, it brings the popular book by Julia Donaldson to life. In the story, Stick Man has many adventures in his journey to return home to his family tree. The trail has climbing frames, slides, swings, Stick Man’s family tree and a giant swan’s nest.

The Stick Man play trail is open to everyone and free to use during park opening hours throughout the year. There is a charge for car parking but costs go back towards maintaining the park and protecting its wildlife.

As mentioned above being outside in nature is one of the best remedies for the mind, connect with nature and love mother earth.
